This performance is shaped by data from a sediment sample extracted from the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The sample, with its oldest layers dating back to the early 19th century, has informed the form of this performance over two months during the exhibition Hidden Archives and has also contributed to the video and sound design through graphic notation and numerical data. Our marine biologist, researcher Conny Sjöqvist, has resurrected algal cells buried in the seabed since the 1960s from the sample in order to model their adaptation to warming seas. Zombie algae cells—we\’ll hear more about them!
The cruise through our costume design is guided by armor made from dried kombucha, yarn made from brown algae, and t-shirts submerged in the seabed. Sensing the collective memory of the Baltic Sea becomes an act of fumbling in the dark when we cannot perceive the details. We can rely on sustainable design thinking and strive to sense those things from which we can understand that we don't really understand.
