Hidden archives (2024)

Fern Orchestra's exhibition Hidden Archives at Brinkkala Gallery in Turku 12.4.-2.6.2024 includes a light and sound installation, textile art installations and a still growing Haute Couture costumes. The exhibition will be realized by the science and art collectives Vespa Laine, Markus Heino, Jaakko Mäkinen, Saara Isola and Conny Sjöqvist.

The light and sound artwork Hidden Archives consists of a sample scraped from the bottom of the Baltic Sea, from which scanned data is transformed into sound and light. The work, which will be composed during the exhibition, will be performed in the Turku City Theatre in the autumn of 2024 in the collective's performance Compressed Time; it is probably the first performance with Baltic Sea as a composer. Collaboration will continue with Conny Sjöqvist, researcher at Åbo Akademi University, on "Adaptation to Global Warming in Phytoplankton using Resurrection Ecology - AWARE", which focuses on material analysed from sediment samples in the Baltic Sea.

Dried "leather" grown from bacteria and fabric coated with algae serve as materials for Jaakko Mäkinen's design. Due to the slow growth process, the costumes will continue to grow in Brinkkala's exhibition residence, ending up on stage in the autumn. The crocheted installation Diversity, which celebrates the Baltic Sea's species diversity, spreads across the gallery space, creating a soundscape as you walk on the carpet. The individual 1705 parts of the audio-textile were crafted by the Raisio-based pensioners' group Hulvelan puuhaajat and made into an artwork by Saara Isola. She has also tufted artwork Secrets for the exhibition.
