Breath - BIO LIGHT ART INSTALLATION - organic light (2018)

Aquatic photosynthetic bacteria, and microalgae which has evolved from that bacteria, produce half of our planet's oxygen. So for every second breath we take, we ought to thank the microorganisms in the ocean. Therefore it is as important to preserve the oceans, as any other components of our nature.

Breath is a bio light art installation in which dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii causes a bioluminescent phenomenon when subjected to mechanical stress. The algae is not visible to the eye, but its light effect is. The work has been produced in collaboration with the Department of Environmental and Marine Biology at Åbo Akademi University and the Marine Centre of the Finnish Environment Institute.

The opening of the work was at the LUX IN Light Art Exhibition at the Cable Factory in Helsinki part of LUX HELSINKI 3-9.1.2019
