”Atmospheric oxygen levels steadily increased over hundreds of millions of years from 0% to about 21%, which is the level we are used to today. Currently, photosynthetic bacteria and microalgae that have evolved from early bacterial species produce about 50% of all oxygen on Earth. Therefore, for every second breath we take, we ought to remember to thank the microorganisms in the ocean.”
